100% Worth Seeing.

'50/50'

Cancer and Comedy, is one of those things which you would never think that would go together. Cancer effects most people, you probably know someone who's had it, a family member, friends, neighbors or work colleagues, etc. This was a hard film to write, also quite risky, that it could offend very easily. '50/50' is based on true life experience of writer Will Reiser, so it's coming from someone who knows all the feelings of a cancer sufferer.

Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a 27 year old young man, who is working for a radio station in Seattle, who contracts a rare form of spinal cancer. He takes a journey through the downs of having cancer, and finds out whats important to him, like his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) who can sometimes be quite annoying but generally cares about Adam, His ever worrying Mum (Anjelica Huston) and his Dad who has Alzheimer's. Through Adams treatment he meets new people, fellow cancer patients Mitch and Alan, who he bonds with whilst having treatment. His Therapist to help him through his emotions, Kathrine (Anna Kendrick). His girlfriend Rachael, who seems she couldn't really care less for Adam.

This is a superbly written movie by Will Reiser, who draws on personal experience, and has an art on dealing with the viewers emotions, which is an amazing thing to do as a writer. Joseph Gordon-Levitt brings the very likable Adam alive, with some raw emotion and frustration, in one scene where he just crumbles apart in Kyle's car in a fit of rage and sadness. Anjelica Huston is also brilliant as a mother who you can just see her heart tearing apart at her son's and husbands illnesses.

Seth Rogen's shtick can be a little irritating. I don't mind Rogen at all, but I can see why people can find him annoying by repeating the same thing in most of his movies. A couple of times the film does draw a fine line of taste maybe a couple of times, where Kyle is constantly trying to get Adam to use his illness to get with Women, but those scenes are saved by the brilliant writing.

This is a brilliant Comedy/Drama of the highest. Don't let the 'A comedy about Cancer' tag put you off seeing it. Very tastefully done and will leave you wanting to see it again and again.
