Bangkok or bust!

'The Hangover Part II'

The Hangover was 2009's breakout out comedy, which chronicled the piecing together of one crazy Stag night of drinking and drug spiking. This led to a hilarious day of retracing steps of the night before. The box office grossed a lot of money and everyone wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Cue 'the' sequel....

The opening credits start with beautiful shots of Thailand, so you're already guessing what kind of mischief is going to happen! We are reintroduced to the 'Wolfpack', The uptight married-man-to-be Stu (Ed Helms) Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Alan (Zach Galifianakis). Among a number of recognisable faces, it was pleasing to see Jeffrey Tambor as Alan's dad make a return cameo. We see Bradley Cooper on the phone to his wife explaining that they have messed up big time! Then we flash back and see how the story unravels.

There are some things that don't seem right within the film itself. The basic layout of the film is almost identical to the first film, which in itself was a great movie. But we all know that simply recreating something doesn't always mean success. The final straw was the mid movie Ed Helms singsong, hm I've seen this before. Zach Galifianakis is average here as Alan, but I found some of the jokes fall a bit flat.

The film has some redeeming features, the return of the very funny Mr Chow played by the rising comedy star 'Ken Jeong', who gets a lot of the laughs on his return. Thailand offers a brilliant setting also throughout the movie.

This is a poor sequel, which is unoriginal and doesn't offer anything we didn't see in the first movie. I suspect it will do brilliantly at the box office. Please Todd Phillips leave it alone now and do not attempt a part III.
