Blupping Aliens!

'Attack The Block'

Joe Cornish, one half of 'The Adam and Joe show' has come quite along way from the fantastic late night Channel 4 show. He delivers here a decent slice of Sci-fi Thriller. There is a lot of comedy elements but don't expect a Comedy film folks!

The film centres around a gang lead by a very serious young man called 'Moses' played by John Boyega, where it seems from the get go there isn't going to be a lot of laughs with this kid! The film is set on bonfire night, where the gang are out causing mischief and mugging a future important character called 'Sam'(Jodie Whittaker). The film doesn't take long to kick off into some action, where the young hoodlums see a flash of light come out of the sky and crash down to earth, which is no firework.

What they discover is a small alien which had forgotten to shave that morning, The gang investigate and the little alien attack Moses and scuttles off, then being teenagers they seek revenge, which opens up a big can of worms which to leads to bigger aliens!
A criticism of the things which came from outer space, they do look a little poor, with only being very very black and bright green eyes.

The Most recognisable face here is Nick Frost as drug dealer who lives on the block, Frost delivers his usual dry whit which has captured a lot of peoples attention, it does seem weird seeing Frost and no Simon Pegg.

The story keeps momentum throughout, with the standout scene being the fantastic chase in the movie, with added BMXs and fireworks. The scene is shot well and is fast paced.

The other standouts in the movie are the two little wannabe gang members and the brilliant 'Luke Treadaway' as a posh middle class 'Brewis‘, he gets quite a few laughs with his posh boy doing street lingo, but I guess that would always get laughs in a movie.

This is a strong first outing from Cornish and it will be interesting to see where he goes next from here, he has helped with the screenplay for the upcoming 'Tintin' movie which looks to be pretty decent. Although some people could find this movie difficult as it is a little rough around the edges or cannot handle the gang culture theme.

3.5 out of 5
