My first memory of watching 'Withnail & I' was around 5 years ago, after my eldest brother kept telling me to "watch this film it's a classic!" Finally I did and it change the way I view films forever.
When your younger all you really expect from a comedy is nudity and fart jokes (well me and my friends did). Theres nothing wrong with that and some of my favourite comedies contain these (yes I am a Kevin Smith fan).
But with Withnail & I is a black comedy, at it's rawest and finest.
The story centres around two out of work actors in their 30's who live in 1960's London. Withnail played magnificently by Richard E. Grant and 'I' loosely based on the director and writer Bruce Robinson is played by the very likeable 'Paul Mcgann'.
Both are fed up of being out of work and grow tired of London, so retreat to the countryside home of Withnail's very camp uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths) and encounter some very unusual country folk. Look out for the very drunken Tea rooms scene
This is an extremely funny and well written film containing some of the most quotable lines in comedy history.
If you are looking for fault then there is cinematography but this is more due to a low budget with the acting and writing make up for this minor flaw in an excellent film.
In two words BUY THIS.
5 out of 5
